Water and Power Development Authority was established in 1958 as the statutory body and it has the power wing with the redefined as Hydel Power generation, operation and maintenance of power houses. WAPDA is included with Mangla and Terbela Dams, which are playing an important role in producing electricity to meet the demands of the people. WAPDA has started the National Water Resource and Hydropower Development programs and it has initiated the projects for Water Vision 2025 for the production of 16,000 MW of hydroelectricity. WAPDA has started the construction of five multi dimensional water storage dams and they will help to handle the acute water storage and generate cheap hydroelectricity. This organization has the responsibility of designing, planning and execution of different projects for the Water Resource Development, hydro power and drainage. It also operates and maintains the inter-provincial surface water projects. There is acute shortage of electricity in the country and it is necessary for WAPDA to manage the excessive quantity of water and power to meet the domestic and commercial requirement of the users.
