About Muhammad Shaheer Jamil

Dear Sir / Madam, As a Bachelor of Engineering student of McGill University’s Mechanical Engineering Program, with a tremendous interest in Mechanical Product Design & Analysis, I was immediately drawn to your posting. I am confident that the combination of my academic background, internship experiences, experiences with the Rocket and Formula Electric Design teams at McGill, and my passion for working in the Engineering industry makes me an ideal candidate for this position. As part of MRT McGill Rocket Team, I am involved in 2 sub-teams and various projects, all of which required me to work and co-ordinate with multi-disciplinary teams. As a member of the Aerostructures sub-team, I worked on the Engine Block Optimization Project. I optimized the design of the Engine Block on SolidWorks in order to increase its safety ratio. The Aerostructures team required us to increase the number of untapped holes, but we simultaneously needed to fulfill the Avionics sub-team’s objective that the Engine block should retain its ability to provide sufficient thrust. I also had to co-ordinate with the Mechanical Testing Laboratory to perform physical destructive testing on the Engine Block to determine when the assembly failed. Additionally, as a member of the Propulsion sub-team, I worked on the Electric Propellant Valve Project. I worked with the team that did online research to find the best valve, and also with the team that optimized the design of the valve on SolidWorks. In both these experiences, I worked with various multidisciplinary teams and with team members that had diverse expertise. These experiences provided me the ability to work well in multidisciplinary teams. I learnt a lot of technical and soft skills from my experience at the MRT, which I will definitely bring to this internship. Moreover, during my internship at Beaver Gulf Contracting, I completed 2 BOPs Bill of Payments and studied Engineering Drawings & reported the required quantities of Engineering Devices to the Finance Department. Both these tasks were new to me. I self learnt how to calculate BOPs along with understanding Engineering Drawings. Then I had to finish these tasks. As I was bound by strict deadlines and had to work on both projects simultaneously, I had to effectively organize my schedule and plan these tasks accordingly. This experience perfectly embedded the skills within me to organize, plan & manage my time and tasks accordingly in order to finish them simultaneously. I am certain that this, along with my ability and experience to read, understand and interpret Engineering Drawings, will be really valuable for working in this position. As part of the Propulsion sub-team in the MRT, while doing the Electric Propellant Valve Project, I was given large amounts of reading material from which I obtained the required information before proceeding with the project. Gauging which reading material and in how much depth I had to study it to fulfill the tasks; required strong judgement skills, which I obtained through this experience and will bring along with me to this position. Additionally, I was the team lead for the Blast Chamber Project at the MRT. Handling tasks between team members, communicating with them and taking charge towards finishing the project by availing everyone’s abilities developed coherent leadership and communication skills in me. My proficiency in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MS Office, programming in C, Python, C++, VBA and MATLAB, through learning in classes and the experience of utilizing them in projects outside the classroom; provides a solid base to my candidacy for this position. Furthermore, my courses and labs such as: Measurement Laboratory, Solid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Statics, Dynamics, Design Graphics and Principles of Manufacturing; along with my extra-curricular experiences, especially the MRT and the ENA Engine workshop, have instilled within me an outstanding blend of technical knowledge and skills. I’d be glad if we can set aside some time in which I can provide an even more comprehensive discussion regarding how my achievements, skills, knowledge and experiences will translate into successful completion of my responsibilities. Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing your response at your earliest convenience. Best regards, Shaheer Jamil
